Three carriages bearing the historic cannons on Chatham Waterfront have been replaced with new ones that will last for the next 100 years. Volunteers from Fort Amherst helped to replace the wooden carriages, which have been dug up on the site, to the new metal garrison carriages. These works took place recently, as the wooden supports began to rot and become unstable. The volunteers assisted with the foundry work, assembly and painting of the carriages before placing the cannons onto the new carriages using specialist lifting equipment.
Project leader and Fort Amherst trustee Steve Quinton commented: "This was a big undertaking for us as a small historical charity, but it is something we know a bit about, the move and lifting went all to plan. This has been an excellent example of the fort and Medway Council working together to the mutual benefit of the community. I am delighted with the final results." Comments are closed.
