Plans for a purpose-built boxing gym were approved with 14 votes at the Medway Council Planning Committee on Wednesday evening. St Mary’s Amateur Boxing Club has helped thousands of local young people get into sport since it first opened its doors over 75 years ago - but came under threat when its current building on Street End Road in Chatham were sold in an auction during 2011. Following a fundraising campaign and a £50,000 grant from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund, they were able to purchase disused land in Shipwrights Avenue, Luton.
The new gym will be a two-storey building, situated adjacent to the Luton Millennium Green public park and behind a row of homes. It will have an attractive design, with vertical timber cladding, and an access road leading to the facility with a car park will also be constructed. The club is also currently in talks with mhs homes to address potential issues regarding parking within the immediate area of the new gym. Tristan Osborne, ward councillor for Luton & Wayfield, commented: “It’s a historic club with long standing links to Luton area. The benefits to young people are insurmountable.” The club also plans to outreach to local schools and is aiming to become a centre for sporting excellence for the area. |
