Plans for 202 family homes and 63 extra care apartments on a new housing development have been given the go-ahead by Medway Council's planning committee. Work on the second and final phase of Horsted Park will commence shortly, including extensive public open spaces and community facilities. Countryside Properties are nearing completion the first phase of the new housing development with 87 homes, on the former MidKent College site in Maidstone Road, Chatham. Iain McPherson, managing director of Countryside's new homes and communities South division, commented: "Our plans for Horsted Park will create an environment where high-quality homes, excellent facilities and infrastructure and pleasant green open spaces combine to offer a welcoming place for people to call home."
This next phase of Horsted Park will also deliver new green open spaces for the public and new community facilities at the heart of the developing village. Three carriages bearing the historic cannons on Chatham Waterfront have been replaced with new ones that will last for the next 100 years. Volunteers from Fort Amherst helped to replace the wooden carriages, which have been dug up on the site, to the new metal garrison carriages. These works took place recently, as the wooden supports began to rot and become unstable. The volunteers assisted with the foundry work, assembly and painting of the carriages before placing the cannons onto the new carriages using specialist lifting equipment.
Project leader and Fort Amherst trustee Steve Quinton commented: "This was a big undertaking for us as a small historical charity, but it is something we know a bit about, the move and lifting went all to plan. This has been an excellent example of the fort and Medway Council working together to the mutual benefit of the community. I am delighted with the final results." The Chatham Big Screen was installed on the Waterfront Pumping Station late last year, and continues to transform the Chatham waterfront area into a hub of culture, entertainment and education. Forming part of the riverside pumping station, the Big Screen creates a vibrant space in the heart of Chatham for residents and visitors, providing live coverage of major cultural and sporting fixtures.
