Chatham's best-known riverside area, Sun Pier, is a local historical landmark which is vital towards a regenerated city centre of Medway. The pier dates back to the 1860s and was once very popular with the people of Chatham and other areas, however the decline began and things went from bad to worse for Chatham's very own pier. Past
In 2007, the pier was once again damaged and the mooring pontoon was destroyed, which was never fixed until recent years. This disallowed the proper function of the pier and the decline began. PresentIn early 2013, Medway Council secured £180,000 to fund for repairs of the damaged pier and a new landing pontoon was later installed. This has enabled the pier to be put back into public use, with Jetstream Tours starting river tours around Medway from Sun Pier. FutureMedway Council and developers have outlined a positive future for Sun Pier. With the new landing pontoon installed, there is a possibility for water taxis to connect Chatham town centre with Medway City Estate, aiming to avoid congestion on the roads and being more eco-friendly. Also, there have been plans to further develop the pier with proposals to open an outdoor restaurant or cafe on Sun Pier.

There was a cafe, toilets, harbour masters office and Kent land corps office under the central covered area until at least 1969, I used to live in Medway Street, opposite the flour mill and wood yard.. Comments are closed.
