Barclays in Chatham High Street could become two shops, according to a fresh application to change the use of the building. The building's landlord, Winpost Ltd, has submitted plans to Medway Council to subdivide the bank to create two retail units. However, it remains unclear whether or not the bank faces closure. The ground floor, first floor and basement of the building are let to Barclays until 14 December 2024 at an annual rent of £60,000. The freehold of the building, which includes vacant offices on the second floor and a separate ground floor unit previously occupied by a gym, is currently listed as for sale by estate agent Watson Day, with offers over £1.75m being invited.
Barclays declined to comment on the plans or the future of its branch, saying that it was "a matter for the landlord". It's the only remaining Barclays in Medway following the closure of the branches in Rochester in 2013, Gillingham in 2015, and Strood and Rainham in 2021. The same change-of-use application was submitted by the landlord in 2019 and subsequently approved by the council, although its planning permission has since expired. If Barclays did close where to bank. All 5 towns would be without a Barclays Bank . Good for the frail, elderly and blind people.

Barclays should not close at all Coop Bank moved out of Medway. Telephone Banking, Online Banking and Mobile Banking work just as well. There are computers people can use for free at Libraries and if you don't know how to use a computer, there's are staff at the Libraries willing to help. You can put cash into your bank account via a post office.
