The iconic Pentagon Shopping Centre has been part of Chatham town centre and Medway for over four decades, and will be celebrating its anniversary next weekend. The local shopping centre opened its doors in 1975, serving as the main shopping district for the area. The centre has been through lot's of transformation and changes, including the major refurbishment in the 1990's and many stores opening and closing over the past years. The Pentagon Shopping Centre has changed a lot since first opening its doors to the public in 1975, with major retailers such as C&A and the Co-Op department store closing. Among those stores include Bejam, Stead & Simpson, Jones of Chatham, Top Shop and many more. In recent months, WH Smith closed in April 2015 and new retailers such as Pep & Co, Equivalenza and a British Heart Foundation Furniture shop have moved in. In the pipeline for the future of the centre, there are plans to give a major refurbishment of The Pentagon, to integrate it into the 21st century vision of Chatham town centre. The plans include expanding the shopping centre to accommodate additional retail space for bigger chains, residential units, a large food store and more leisure facilities, as well as giving the centre a general makeover. To celebrate the centre's 40th anniversary, there will be a day of birthday celebrations on Saturday, October 3, 2015, with fun activites for the children such as Punch and Judy shows, a crazy golf course, hoopla and much more. The events will take place between 11am - 3pm. Bosses are also encouraging local people to submit photographs or memories they have of the Pentagon to create a birthday card. If you want to share your memories, please email [email protected] or post on the Pentagon's Facebook page.
