The final phase of a £12 million regeneration project in The Brook area of Chatham town centre is nearing completion, as the remaining homes are being prepared for residents to move in. Kent's largest landlord and not-for-profit housing association, mhs homes, have delivered a total of 77 new homes across three separate sites since 2015 - Cross Street, Upbury Mews and Eldon Street. The first homes at Cross Street are expected to be available for rent by early 2018, while the remaining shared ownership homes will be ready by April. The 50 new homes at Cross Street include 20 for affordable rent, 11 for market rent and 19 shared ownership homes, found in a prime location with excellent access to the town centre and train station. The regeneration project is an outstanding example of urban regeneration, combining three sites to form one community, as reflected by its shortlist status for the '2017 Inside Housing Development Award for Best Regeneration Project'. Sarah Paxton, Assistant Director of Development at mhs homes, said: “We’re thrilled to be delivering 50 new homes as part of The Brook regeneration, working closely with Medway Council to ensure that more affordable homes are provided for the people who need them most. While house prices in Medway are lower than neighbouring boroughs, they’ve been rising in recent years, placing many properties beyond the reach of local people. We’re extremely proud of what’s been achieved here, and will be looking forward to welcoming the first residents into their new homes in the New Year.” The homes have been developed in partnership with Medway Council (supporting their ambitious regeneration programme for the area) and leading Kent construction firm, Chartway Group, PSW Building Consultancy Ltd and Building Associates. The scheme was also part-funded by a £500,000 grant from The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). Not only have they replaced sub-standard accommodation with quality homes that meet all current development standards, they’ve also greatly improved the local area." Tim McLoughlin, Projects Director for Chartway Group, said: “We are pleased to have delivered the 50 new homes at Cross Street, Chatham which forms part of the wider regeneration of the Brook, Chatham. The homes delivered provide a range and mix of tenure, which have met Medway Council and Central Government targets for affordable housing delivery. Working with our key partner MHS and also Medway Council and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has been key to regenerating what was once an area containing pre-fabricated post war homes. The new homes have been designed and constructed to promote energy efficiency, Lifetime Homes Standards, and all meet Medway Council's space standards."
