- A refurbishment project focused on Sun Pier was undertaken, externally funded through the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) and the Local Growth Fund (LGF). The project had a budget of circa £160,000 and involved the partial replacement of the decking where needed, stripping and repainting of the surface metalwork, replacement of the wooden handrail, installation of new benches, and the implementation of a new lighting scheme. These works, as well as the previous replacement of the inadequate pontoon, are a key part of attracting more positive use and interaction with the River Medway, establishing a safer and more engaging destination.
- A section of the existing river walk stretching from the Pumping Station to Sun Pier and beyond was significantly improved between May 2015 and November 2015. The project included the resurfacing of the footpath with new high-quality paving materials, installation of a new lighting scheme and a new guard rail. Also, the existing CCTV coverage network was augmented to cover the extended river walk adjoining the Empire Reach residential development. The pedestrianised route between Pier Chambers and Sun Pier was improved in conjunction with the river walk project, featuring a new paving surface, the installation of street furniture (new benches and bins), as well as the planting of new trees. The public realm improvements have encouraged positive use and interaction between the town centre and the River Medway, as well as addressing previous safety concerns through the reduction of street drinkers and anti-social behaviour.
- The unsatisfactory pavement along the northern side of Medway Street was improved to complement the project in the wider area. The works included the removal of the redundant parking bays of the demolished shop units, realigning the kerb line, and resurfacing the pavement with new high-quality materials. These improvements have delivered a clear and continuous line between Sun Pier and the bus station, strengthening the link with the Waterfront, in addition to supporting future development proposed for the adjoining car park site.
